Is Vitamin Water Actually Healthy?

Introduction:

Over the past ten years people have been highly interested in consuming vitamin water. Marketing shows that the drink is nutritious, many health benefits and that it’s so good well-known athletes even drink it. Although it is packed with vitamins and minerals, what else is added to this drink that isn’t advertised?

Healthy Aspects

To start off this debate, lets focus on the healthy aspects of Coco Cola’s Vitamin Water. The first health benefit it does have minerals and nutrients added, which helps replenish what the body is lacking. This can be very important if someone is an athlete or is on a low-calorie diet. Another health benefit is each flavor has a specific targeting health benefit, like, energy booster, focus enhancer and many more.

The Negative Sides of Vitamin Water:

Exploring the internet trying to look for positive health benefit information for Vitamin Water was quite difficult, as all that came up was why the drink is so unhealthy. Searching different things like, “positive beTnefits of vitamin water” or “good vs. bad factors of vitamin water.” There was nothing, all that came up were the articles against vitamin water.

Now let’s focus on all the negative effects of Vitamin Water and why people are so against this beverage.

A big reason people are so against this product is because of the false marketing. This drink is supposed to be healthy and help the body, but looking at many different science articles it’s very much the opposite of healthy. They have made many claims that are false. For example, they claimed to have real acai, blueberry and pomegranate juices, but, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) there was none of these real fruit juices found. Once this came out, a US advocacy group sued against Coco-Cola.

Another negative thing about this drink is the sugar amount. An average adult is supposed to consume 2,500 calories daily and 10% can be added sugars (preferably less). 10% equals 62 grams of added sugars that is supposed to be consumed and a Vitamin Water full bottle for most flavors includes 31 grams. That is half of the recommend sugars your supposed to consume a day, which is a quite a lot because most things a person eats has added sugars. So, by consuming half of the recommend sugars in one drink is pretty insane.

Added sugar is linked with developing type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart diseases, metabolic syndrome and in extreme situations cancer. What causes these health issues is one of the major ingredients of sugar, which is fructose due to the liver only being able to metabolize it in small amounts. Having more than the recommend amount can increase blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, insulin resistance and fat around the organs. All of these things are risk factors of developing the health issues discussed before. These are things that can happened, but that doesn’t mean it will happened.

For either gaining or losing weight what a person puts into there body is very crucial. Some people think that what they drink is less important than what they eat, and that it has less of an effect regarding calories wise, but it’s equally as important. When drinking beverages that are packed with added sugars on top of eating, it can lead to weight gain, obesity and other heart issues. Drinking sugary drinks is one of the world’s biggest factors of obesity. And after all this research Vitamin Water is like any other sugary drink, so it can have the same affects.

Conclusion:

Overall, Vitamin water isn’t as healthy as Coke makes it seem. The company is doing a marketing scheme and people are realizing it and calling them out for it. Looking at all the research over the internet most articles has poor reviews on the drink and for good reason. Although it was a good idea to have a healthy, yet nutrient packed drink, this drink is just not that. This drink can lead to weight gain, heart issues and other health issues. So, remember don’t always believe what a company is advertising because most of the time it’s false news.
